Mother-in-Law's birthday

Cristan's mother-in-law, Margo, was having a birthday with the family. So I got a call to make her a birthday cake. Spring flowers are always nice. I am particularly proud of the roses. I also like the color combination. Don't ask me what the other flower are, I kinda just made them up.

Susan's 60th Surprise Birthday

Amanda's mom turned 60 this year, so her girls (Amanda and Rebecca) decided to throw her a surprise party. I chose a damask font to create the butter cream designs on the side. I used royal icing flood and an Ivy font to create the 60 topper. I was worried the pink would be too bright, but once I got it set up with all the decorations it fit in nicely. I am just honored they asked me to be a part of such a special celebration.

Zachary's Appalachian Birthday

Zachary turned five this year. He wanted an Appalachian Football birthday this year. Luckily his mom, Amanda, was able to find an ASU cake pan in Boone at the bookstore. The football field has butter cream footballs around the sides. Zach actually had 2 birthday parties: on his birthday with his friends and then another with his family. So he had two Appalachian A cakes.

Pottery Barn Baby shower

Cristan was throwing a shower for a good friend. We decided to use the baby's bedding for inspiration for the cake's theme. I think the bedding is called Eli's Elephant. I loved the blue/green combinations and the use of stripes and polka dots.

Laundry Basket Baby shower Cake

My sister helped throw a Daddy baby shower. The daddy was not going to be able to attend the baby showers because he would be out of town working. So his family and friends threw a small shower for him and his soon to be daughter.

They didn't want the theme to be too girlie since it was a Daddy shower. So they started off with a pink camo theme. They had bought the baby a cute pink camo dress with Bambi on the front that said "Daddy's little Deer". So with the help of the party planners I made a laundry basket full of girlie goodies made of marshmallow fondant: camo blanket, hairbrush, rattle, pacifier, teddy bear, onsie, bib, and bottle. I also made baby booties out of marshmallows covered in butter cream icing. The new technique I tried out on the camo blanket. I used a green base for the blanket and then put pieces of pink and white on top then blended them together with a rolling pen. Some of the fondant pieces blended better than others, but overall I as pleased with the outcome.

Elmo Birthday

January 20, 2010My friend Stephanie asked me to make her son, Riley's, first birthday cake. I wanted it to be special. I found an awesome picture online and was excited at the challenge of making a 3D Elmo. But things didn't go as planned. Unfortunately the 3D cake collapsed leaving only a hemisphere that was usable. It wasn't until I started having problems with the cake construction at I realized the design I had picked included a very complicated skeletal structure to support the weight at different points including dowel rods and wire. So I decided to modify my original plan and do a 3D Elmo head on a sheet cake. I made a matching "patty" cake for Riley.

Although the cake was a huge success at the party, it was a very emotional night for me. It was a combination of stress, lack of sleep, and pregnancy hormones that sent me over the edge. Jason and I decided if I were going to continue baking, I needed to make sure I didn't over extend myself. Neither he nor I could handle another "Elmo disaster". I'm just glad that Riley had a wonderful birthday despite the change in plans.

Hannah Montana Birthday

My niece, Darcy, wanted a Hannah Montana birthday for her 4th birthday. I used the Hannah Montana pan and added a square tier underneath to provide more cake. She didn't put on a concert that day, but I've been told she performs nightly at home.
